Can Portugal Rise to the Challenge Against Spain in FIFA World Cup 2026? Insights from Bhaichung Bhutia
Portugal vs. Spain: A Clash of Rivals
New Delhi: Bhaichung Bhutia, the former captain of India, has expressed that Portugal must elevate their performance significantly to defeat their neighbors, Spain, in the highly anticipated Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He cautioned that another lackluster performance could mark the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable World Cup journey.
Portugal secured their spot in the knockout stage after narrowly defeating Croatia 2-1 in a thrilling match, while Spain showcased their strength with a solid 3-1 win over Austria, setting the stage for a captivating encounter.
Despite Portugal's advancement, Bhutia remains skeptical about Roberto Martinez's squad, noting that the team has struggled to operate cohesively.
He stated, "If Portugal continues to play as they have been, I don't foresee them moving forward. They lack unity and teamwork. While they have numerous superstars, they haven't managed to perform collectively." Bhutia, who is part of the expert panel for ZEE5’s FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage, shared these insights during an exclusive interview.
He further warned, "If their current performance persists, we might witness Ronaldo's final World Cup appearance."
The rivalry between Spain and Portugal is one of the oldest in international football, dating back over a century. Although they have faced each other only twice in World Cup history, this will be their third encounter in the last five tournaments.
Spain triumphed over Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 during the 2010 World Cup, which led them to victory in the tournament, while their memorable group-stage clash in 2018 ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, featuring a remarkable hat-trick from Ronaldo.
Historically, the two nations have been closely matched, with each securing 12 wins in their 41 encounters, alongside 12 draws, highlighting the competitive nature of their rivalry.
Looking ahead, Bhutia identified four teams as the top contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title, with France standing out as his top pick.
He remarked, "The teams that appear strongest are France, Spain, England, and Argentina. If I had to choose one, France currently seems to be the favorite due to their overall team balance, depth, and formidable attacking lineup."
The 2022 World Cup runners-up, France, have been impressive in the ongoing tournament, remaining unbeaten in the group stage and defeating Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32, setting up a match against Paraguay in the Round of 16.
