Odisha FC Aims for First Win Against NorthEast United

Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC is eager to secure their inaugural victory in the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season as they prepare to face NorthEast United FC at Kalinga Stadium this Saturday. After two matches, Odisha has managed to earn just one point, while NorthEast United has emerged victorious in both of their opening games, placing them at the top of the league table.

This upcoming match recalls their last encounter in March, where Odisha triumphed with a 4-1 scoreline, featuring two goals from Rahul K.P. and a debut goal from Subham Bhattacharya.

Odisha's head coach, TG Purushothaman, anticipates a tougher challenge this time against a NorthEast United team that has developed strong chemistry over recent seasons. He remarked, “It will be a tough match for us. They are a well-gelled team. They have been playing together for two to three years. Their understanding and combinations are good.”

Purushothaman emphasized the need for his players to manage expectations and perform without pressure, stating, “We have to go without pressure; pressure won’t give you anything, it will give you all the negative things. We have to overcome the pressure and we have to find a way on how we need to perform well in a positive way.”

On the other hand, NorthEast United's head coach, Juan Pedro Benali, downplayed the importance of their current top position, cautioning his players against underestimating Odisha FC. He recalled last season’s loss in Guwahati, saying, “Last season, everybody underestimated Odisha, and they beat us here. We don’t want to make the same mistake.”

Benali further noted, “Every game is a new story, new tactics, new everything. If you think the last game means you will win the next one, you’re mistaken.”

He also commended forward Parthib Gogoi for his team-oriented mindset, especially after he played only a few minutes in his 100th match for the club, stressing the importance of collective success over individual achievements. However, NorthEast United will miss defender Asheer Akhtar, who is recovering from a broken rib, although Benali mentioned that Asheer could resume training next week.

Meanwhile, Odisha's recent acquisition, Stephen Eze, remains calm amid rising expectations from home fans. He stated, “The fans will be here; there are too many expectations. I am just focused on the game. No pressure. I will do what I can do best to help my team.”

As the hosts, Odisha FC will aim to leverage their home advantage to convert their efforts into points.
