Ravichandran Ashwin, a former cricketer for India, provided his insights on the fierce bidding contest between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini auction. KKR secured Green for a staggering Rs 25.20 crore, marking him as the highest-priced overseas player in IPL history.

CSK and KKR's Competitive Pursuit

Both CSK and KKR were seen as frontrunners to acquire Green, a prominent figure in the mini auction, largely due to their substantial budgets compared to other teams. While both franchises aggressively chased the young all-rounder, CSK opted out when the bidding surpassed Rs 25 crore.

Ashwin's Take on KKR's Strategy

Ashwin remarked that KKR acted hastily in their bidding for Green, suggesting they could have forced CSK out of the race much earlier. He noted, "If KKR had exercised a bit more patience, similar to how Punjab approached their bids, CSK might have relinquished their interest in Green sooner. KKR seemed to believe that CSK was bidding on Green out of necessity," he explained on his YouTube channel.

A Major Win for KKR

According to Ashwin, while CSK missed a significant opportunity by not securing Green, his talent is undeniable, making him a valuable addition for KKR. "Cameron Green would have been a fantastic fit for CSK; they overlooked a key opportunity. Regardless of the price, Green is a generational talent, and KKR's acquisition is exceptional," Ashwin concluded.

Cameron Green is set to play for his third IPL team, having previously been with the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He missed the last auction due to a long-term injury sustained during the off-season.
