Cameron Green's Bowling Comeback

Cameron Green, an all-rounder for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), resumed bowling in the nets in preparation for the IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens Stadium on April 2.

His absence from bowling during KKR's initial match against the Mumbai Indians raised concerns, prompting captain Ajinkya Rahane to direct inquiries about Green's situation to Cricket Australia. In response, Cricket Australia clarified that Green was managing a lower-back issue and that KKR was fully informed about his condition.

Bowling Resumption and Performance

A spokesperson from Cricket Australia indicated that Green is anticipated to return to full bowling in approximately 10 to 12 days. Acquired for INR 25.2 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Green is among the tournament's highest-paid players, and his absence from bowling has been a topic of discussion.

In a video shared by KKR on their X account (formerly Twitter), Green was observed bowling energetically and successfully hitting the stumps, suggesting he is on track to fulfill his all-rounder role for KKR. He appeared to be in good form without any signs of discomfort.

Managing Injury and Workload

Since recovering from a significant back injury, Green has limited his bowling, often being utilized by Australia across various formats, which has restricted his bowling capacity in the IPL.

During the 2025-26 Ashes series, he bowled only 61.5 overs across nine innings, reflecting a reduced workload. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he bowled just 3.1 overs in five matches.

Defending the Investment in Green

KKR faced scrutiny for spending INR 25.2 crore on Cameron Green, especially given his ongoing back injury. However, head coach Abhishek Sharma defended the franchise's decision, emphasizing that acquiring Green was part of a long-term strategy.

At a press conference prior to the SRH match, Sharma stated that Green's all-round capabilities and potential value over multiple seasons justified the investment, even if his bowling workload is currently limited due to injury.

"Selecting a player in an auction involves considering their long-term potential and past performances," Sharma explained. "Cameron Green, as a cricketer and all-rounder, is vital for us."

Future Outlook

Cameron Green is viewed as a successor to Andre Russell, who retired from the IPL after being released by KKR last year. His ability to return to bowling will depend on his recovery from the lower-back injury and the management of his bowling workload over the next 10 to 12 days.
