Cameron Green's Journey Back to Cricket

Cameron Green, the all-rounder from Australia, has recently shared how Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian pacer, played a significant role in his recovery from a serious back injury that sidelined him for six months.

Green is set to rejoin the Australian team for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 against South Africa, a first-time finalist, scheduled for June 11 at the historic Lord's cricket ground. Last September, he suffered a back injury during the third ODI against England, which led to his exclusion from the series. In October, the 26-year-old underwent surgery to address the issue.

Impact of Injury on Green's Career

Due to his back injury, Green missed several key series, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which Australia won against India after a decade with a 3-1 series victory, securing their spot in the WTC Final. He also missed the home T20I series against Pakistan, the Test series in Sri Lanka, and the Champions Trophy 2025, where Australia was eliminated by India in the semifinals in Dubai.

Bumrah's Support During Recovery

In a press conference before the WTC Final, Green revealed that Bumrah reached out to him the night before his surgery, providing encouragement during a challenging time. This message came while Bumrah was in the midst of India's home Test series against New Zealand.

Green expressed that receiving support from someone who had overcome a similar injury was incredibly reassuring. He stated, "Jasprit Bumrah reached out the night before I was getting surgery. He was in the middle of a Test match in India. Just a few things like that are really special and make you feel a lot better about it."

Bumrah's Injury History

Bumrah himself has faced multiple back injuries throughout his career. His most recent setback occurred during the Sydney Test against Australia in January, where he had to leave the field due to back spasms. This injury kept him out of action for three months, during which he underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence before returning to competitive cricket in the IPL 2025 for the Mumbai Indians, where he took 18 wickets in 12 matches.

Green's Preparation for the WTC Final

To prepare for the WTC Final, Green played for Gloucestershire in the County Championship, aiming to adapt to English conditions and regain his match fitness. He had a successful run, scoring 467 runs, including three centuries and a fifty, with an impressive average of 66.71 across nine innings. His standout performance was an unbeaten 128 against Kent, which showcased his readiness for the upcoming clash.

As the defending champions, Australia aims to make history by becoming the first team to retain their WTC title after winning it against India in the 2023 Final. The team, led by Pat Cummins, finished second in the points table with 13 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws in 19 matches.
