Brazil's Quest for a Sixth Title

On July 6, in New York, five-time champions Brazil are set to advance their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey as they clash with Norway in the Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium this Sunday (local time). Under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, the team aims to inch closer to securing a record sixth world title.

Prior to this knockout match, Noguchi Yasushi, Japan's Ambassador to Brazil, took to X to show his support for the Selecao, especially after Brazil's thrilling win against Japan in the previous round.

He expressed, "Today, we join our Brazilian friends in cheering for a spot in the quarterfinals. Let’s go, Brazil! Let’s get that sixth title!"

Brazil advanced to the last 16 by finishing at the top of Group C with seven points, edging out their competition on goal difference. They faced a tough challenge against Japan in the Round of 32, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory, thanks to a last-minute goal from Gabriel Martinelli.

Ancelotti has kept Martinelli in the starting lineup following his standout performance against Japan. The 19-year-old Rayan will continue to support Vinicius Jr and Matheus Cunha in the attack, while Raphinha and Neymar, both returning from injuries, will start on the bench.

The Brazilian squad will feature Alisson as goalkeeper, with Danilo, Gabriel Magalhaes, Marquinhos, and Douglas Santos forming the defense. Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes will control the midfield behind Martinelli, while Matheus Cunha, Rayan, and Vinicius Jr will lead the offensive charge.

On the other hand, Norway is set to welcome back Julian Ryerson, who missed the Round of 32 match against Ivory Coast. Captain Martin Odegaard will lead the midfield, with Erling Haaland at the forefront of the attack, supported by Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa.

Despite Brazil's impressive record of winning nine out of their last ten Round of 16 matches in the World Cup, they must remain cautious due to their recent difficulties against European teams, having lost their last six knockout stage matches against such opponents.

Norway enters this match with increased confidence, having achieved their first-ever World Cup knockout victory by defeating Ivory Coast 2-1. Stale Solbakken's team has won 15 of their last 20 matches and boasts a historical advantage over Brazil, remaining unbeaten in all four previous encounters, including a notable 2-1 win at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
