Bodo/Glimt Shocks Inter Milan to Advance in Champions League
Bodo/Glimt's Historic Victory
In a remarkable display during the Champions League knockout stage, Bodo/Glimt triumphed over Inter Milan with a 2-1 victory, securing a 5-2 aggregate win that propels them into the last-16. The Norwegian team showcased a blend of discipline, energy, and precise finishing throughout both matches, eliminating one of Europe's traditional football giants.
The first half saw Inter dominate possession but fail to create significant scoring opportunities. However, the dynamics shifted in the second half when Jens Hauge netted the opening goal in the 59th minute, marking his sixth goal of the tournament this season.
Hakon Evjen extended the lead in the 72nd minute, finishing a well-crafted move initiated by Hauge, effectively sealing Inter's fate. Although Alessandro Bastoni scored for Inter in the 76th minute, the Italian side struggled to mount a serious comeback as Bodo/Glimt expertly managed the final moments of the match.
Following the defeat, Inter's coach Cristian Chivu praised Bodo/Glimt's quality, stating, 'We recognize the competitiveness in the Champions League. Teams reaching this stage have proven their worth.' He acknowledged that his team could have performed better across both legs, expressing disappointment but also respect for their opponents.
Inter was missing key players Lautaro Martínez and Hakan Calhanoglu due to injuries, but Chivu noted that Bodo/Glimt had yet to start their domestic league season, which added to the significance of their victory. Kjetil Knutsen, the head coach of Bodo/Glimt, remarked on the historic nature of this achievement for both the club and Norwegian football.
Reflecting on the success, Hauge, who previously played for AC Milan, expressed disbelief at reaching this stage, stating, 'It feels surreal, but we are among the last teams in the competition. I'm eager to see what the next matches hold.'
This victory adds to Bodo/Glimt's impressive European campaign, where they have previously defeated Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, along with a draw against Borussia Dortmund, showcasing their consistent performance.
With this win, Bodo/Glimt has made history by becoming the first team from outside Europe's top five leagues to achieve four consecutive Champions League victories against clubs from those leagues since Ajax in the 1971-72 season. They will now face either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the upcoming last-16 round.
