Bhuvneshwar Kumar Under Pressure Ahead of Third T20I

Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is feeling the heat as he prepares for the third T20I against New Zealand, following a challenging return to India's T20I squad after a four-year hiatus. The match is set to take place on Tuesday at the Hnry Stadium in Wellington, as part of a five-match T20I series. Kumar, who was brought back into the team due to his strong performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has struggled to make a significant impact in the first two games, leading to increased scrutiny.

Since his comeback, Kumar has faced difficulties in restricting the opposition's scoring. In the first T20I, New Zealand scored a formidable 225/4, with Kumar failing to take any wickets and conceding 49 runs in his four overs. His performance in the second T20I was similarly disappointing, as he allowed 50 runs while taking just one wicket, while New Zealand finished with 180/5. With the next match approaching, Kumar is keen to find his form and deliver a more economical bowling performance, especially as his position in the starting lineup may be at risk after two costly outings.

IPL Performance and Team Dynamics

Kumar's return to the national team was fueled by his impressive IPL performances, where he took 27 wickets in the 2025 season and followed it up with 28 wickets in the 2026 season.

The Indian squad for the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand features a blend of experienced and young bowlers. Alongside Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the team includes talented pacer Arshdeep Singh and emerging fast bowlers Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav. In the first T20I, Mayank Yadav stood out with one wicket for 40 runs but was replaced by Prince Yadav in the second match. Prince made a notable impact, taking a wicket and conceding only 30 runs.

Arshdeep Singh’s Milestone Chase

Arshdeep Singh, who leads India in T20I wickets, has had a strong series thus far, securing three wickets in the first two matches. He is just two wickets shy of reaching the significant milestone of 150 T20I wickets, which would make him the first Indian bowler to achieve this landmark. Given the solid performances from the other bowlers in the series, Kumar's position in the playing XI could be in jeopardy as the third T20I approaches.
