Bhaichung Bhutia Criticizes AIFF President Over Indian Football Issues

Bhutia's Strong Critique of AIFF Leadership

New Delhi [India], June 21: Bhaichung Bhutia, the former captain of the Indian football team, has launched a fierce critique against Kalyan Chaubey, the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). He claims that the controversies and corruption allegations surrounding the federation in recent years have severely harmed Indian football. Bhutia advocates for a leader who will genuinely and honestly work towards the sport's improvement.

In response, Chaubey defended his position, stating that Bhutia has ample opportunities to voice his concerns and contribute positively to Indian football. He accused Bhutia of making unfounded claims since losing the elections in September 2022.

Bhutia expressed that even those who previously supported Chaubey have come to regret their decision. He remarked, “While I cannot guarantee that football will improve after Chaubey's departure, it certainly won't decline further. The past few years have seen a drop in rankings and numerous controversies that have tarnished the sport's reputation. The Indian government has been supportive of athletes, but poor leadership can have detrimental effects on everyone involved.”

Chaubey countered that such criticisms not only damage the federation's reputation but also cast a shadow on Indian football internationally. He emphasized the importance of freedom of speech in a democratic society and noted that Bhutia, as a member of the AIFF Executive Committee, has the right platform to express his views constructively.

Chaubey acknowledged Bhutia's criticisms but expressed disappointment that his contributions often focus on opposing board decisions rather than proposing constructive solutions. He invited Bhutia to the upcoming AIFF Executive Committee Meeting on July 2, 2025, encouraging him to present any constructive ideas for discussion.
