Bhaichung Bhutia Celebrates FIFA World Cup 2026 Expansion to 48 Teams
A New Era for the FIFA World Cup
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 11: Bhaichung Bhutia, the former captain of the Indian football team and a renowned striker, has expressed his enthusiasm regarding FIFA's decision to increase the number of teams participating in the 2026 World Cup to 48. He described this move as a "wonderful thing," which significantly enhances India's chances of competing on the world stage.
The upcoming World Cup will feature an unprecedented number of participants, with 1,248 players from 48 countries set to compete, beginning June 12 (Indian Standard Time). Notably, 891 of these players will be making their World Cup debuts, showcasing a blend of experienced and new talent.
Matches will take place across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, marking a significant expansion of this global event.
In a conversation about how this expansion affects the tournament's competitiveness, Bhutia shared his optimism, especially for nations that have historically struggled to qualify.
While fans around the world celebrate this change, Bhutia humorously noted the logistical challenges it presents for broadcasters and commentators in India.
From an Indian viewpoint, he believes this is a positive development. "I wonder why FIFA didn't implement this 30-40 years ago. During my playing days, we came close to qualifying. Now, Asia will have eight teams participating for the first time, an increase from the previous four. This is fantastic news for Indian football fans and players alike," Bhutia remarked.
He emphasized that the inclusion of new footballing nations can transform the sporting culture within those countries, referencing recent successes by Asian teams.
This expanded format will allow countries like Cabo Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan to make their World Cup debuts, with Uzbekistan's participation being particularly significant, highlighted by players like Manchester City's Abdukodir Khusanov.
"Overall, this expansion provides opportunities for many nations from various continents to participate, increasing excitement for fans. Countries like Jordan and Uzbekistan qualifying for the first time will significantly alter the football landscape in those regions," he added.
Argentina, the reigning champions after their victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, will be defending their title. The team, led by the legendary Lionel Messi, triumphed over France in a dramatic final that ended in a penalty shootout.
This edition will also see football icons Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Guillermo Ochoa making their sixth World Cup appearances.
Ronaldo, celebrated as one of the greatest goal scorers, holds the record for the most goals in men's international football, with over 140 goals for Portugal in more than 220 matches.
In terms of total career goals, Ronaldo is recognized as the highest scorer in football history, with over 970 official goals across his stints with Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr, and the Portuguese national team.
