Bhaichung Bhutia Praises Durand Cup Growth
Bhaichung Bhutia, the former Indian football star, has commended the Durand Cup, recognizing it as a significant tournament and expressing enthusiasm for its expansion. He hopes that major football clubs will join in, supported by the Bengal government, and has requested that a group-stage match be held in Siliguri, a city known for its football culture.
135th Edition to Start with Kolkata Derby
The 135th edition of the Durand Cup is set to commence on July 25, featuring the much-anticipated Kolkata Derby where Mohun Bagan Super Giant will face East Bengal FC in the inaugural match.
A Tournament of Great Prestige
"This initiative is commendable as the Durand Cup is the second-oldest tournament globally and carries significant prestige. With the Bengal Government's backing, I hope all major clubs will participate. I also urge that one of the group matches be hosted in Siliguri," Bhutia shared with the media.
National Expansion of the Tournament
The tournament will feature 24 teams divided into six groups, taking place from July 25 to August 23. It will showcase India's top clubs, Services teams, and emerging football institutions, along with international participation, in a month-long football celebration.
This year's Durand Cup will be hosted in Kolkata, Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong, and Guwahati, highlighting its growing national presence while remaining deeply connected to the football-rich regions of eastern and northeastern India. Kolkata will again be the focal point, hosting Groups A and B, the opening match, two quarter-finals, the first semi-final, and the Final.
