Ben Stokes Shines in Comeback Ahead of England's Home Test Series
Stokes' Impressive Return to Competitive Cricket
Ben Stokes made a strong comeback from injury as he prepares for a demanding home Test season with the England cricket team. England is scheduled to host New Zealand and Pakistan for three-match Test series later this year. Stokes played for Durham County Cricket Club against Worcestershire County Cricket Club in the County Championship Division Two, where he showcased his skills with the new ball, taking two wickets in each innings during Durham's nine-wicket victory, according to the ICC website.
In the first innings, Stokes recorded bowling figures of 2/54 over 20 overs, followed by 2/33 in 8.5 overs in the second innings. This match marked Stokes' first competitive appearance since The Ashes 2025-26 earlier this year. He is also recovering from a fractured cheekbone sustained during training in February. Although he had a modest batting performance, scoring 14 runs at No. 5 for Durham, the 34-year-old impressed with his pace while sharing the new ball in both innings, hinting at England's potential plans for him.
Concerns Over England's Fast-Bowling Lineup
England is gearing up for back-to-back three-Test series against New Zealand in June and Pakistan in August-September as part of their ICC World Test Championship campaign. The team faces a shortage of fast-bowling options, which may lead to Stokes taking on the new ball during the home summer.
Following the retirements of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Chris Woakes, England is still in search of their ideal new-ball attack. Injuries to Brydon Carse and Mark Wood, along with ongoing fitness concerns regarding Jofra Archer, have left selectors with significant decisions to make ahead of the opening Test against New Zealand at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 4.
Potential seam-bowling candidates for the England team include Ollie Robinson, Matthew Potts, Sam Cook, and Sonny Baker. Stokes' recent experience with the new ball in county cricket could pave the way for him to take on that role again. He has not opened the bowling in Test cricket since the second innings of the first Test against Pakistan in 2022, but his performance against Worcestershire indicates a promising return to that responsibility.
