Ben Stokes Embraces Sobriety Ahead of Ashes Return

Stokes Commits to Alcohol-Free Lifestyle
Ben Stokes, the captain of the England Test team, has disclosed that he has abstained from alcohol since January 2. This decision is part of his personal commitment to enhance his fitness as he prepares for the upcoming Ashes series later this year.
In an interview on the Untapped podcast, the 33-year-old cricketer shared that his perspective shifted after he began to reflect on his lifestyle choices, particularly following a series of injuries, including a hamstring tear sustained during the tour of New Zealand.
“After my first significant injury, I was shocked. Once the adrenaline wore off, I found myself questioning, 'How did this happen?'” Stokes recounted, as reported by a media outlet.
“I thought back to a few nights prior when I had been drinking and wondered if that contributed to my injury. It certainly wouldn’t have helped. That realization prompted me to consider making changes in my life.”
The all-rounder underwent surgery on his left hamstring in December and has pledged to remain alcohol-free until he completes his rehabilitation.
“I don’t foresee myself being completely sober, but I haven’t had a drink since January 2. I told myself: 'Not until I finish my rehab and return to the field.'”
Stokes Set to Make Comeback Against Zimbabwe
Stokes is poised to return to the field in England's upcoming one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge this Thursday. This match marks the start of a busy home season, which will also feature a five-Test series against India and the much-anticipated Ashes later this year.
Reflecting on his renewed commitment to fitness, Stokes stated:
“The moment I wake up and feel unmotivated to train is when I know I might be losing my passion. However, I have no intention of stopping now.”
In addition to his lifestyle changes, the England star has become a brand ambassador for CleanCo, a non-alcoholic beverage company, aligning with his focus on health and longevity in his cricket career.
It is worth noting that Stokes last participated in international cricket in December 2024 against New Zealand.
