Ben Stokes Ditches Alcohol for Injury Recovery Ahead of Summer Tests
Ben Stokes Focuses on Fitness
London [UK], May 19 (Media House): In preparation for a busy summer, England's Test captain Ben Stokes has decided to eliminate alcohol from his routine during his recovery from injury.
Stokes, who suffered a left hamstring tear in New Zealand last December, is gearing up to lead England in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, which is set to commence on May 22 at Trent Bridge.
Having previously returned from a similar injury last year, Stokes is taking a more cautious approach this time, determined to ensure he is fully fit before England's intense Test schedule begins.
In an interview with the UNTAPPED podcast, the 33-year-old reflected on his past experiences, stating, "After my first significant injury, I was shocked once the adrenaline wore off, thinking, 'How did this happen? We had a few drinks a few nights ago; could that have contributed? It certainly wouldn’t have helped.' That made me realize I needed to change my habits. I don’t plan to be completely sober, but I haven’t touched alcohol since January 2."
He continued, "I promised myself I wouldn’t drink until I complete my rehab and return to the field. The moment I wake up and feel unmotivated to follow my training regimen is when I know I might be losing my passion. However, I’m still very committed. It’s becoming increasingly challenging to maintain everything, which is why I feel compelled to work harder in the gym and elsewhere to maximize my chances of performing well. I’ll keep pushing myself for as long as I can."
Stokes also shared insights on how his perspective on alcohol has evolved over the years, noting, "The demands of the game on the body have intensified. With the increased volume of cricket and a packed schedule, it’s nearly impossible for the body to cope without considering the negative effects that a couple of beers can have the following day."
