Ben Johns Discusses Pressure Management in Mixed Doubles
Navigating High-Pressure Situations in Pickleball
Ben Johns, recognized as one of the top players in professional pickleball, recently shared insights on how he and partner Anna Leigh Waters manage tense moments during mixed doubles matches, especially when the score reaches a critical 10-10. He emphasized that their effectiveness stems from mutual trust and a shared understanding rather than predetermined strategies. 'We don’t really have specific play calls. It feels more like a collective decision. If we do communicate, which is rare, it’s usually just a reiteration of our usual strategy,' Johns remarked.
Johns elaborated that their instinctive approach during crucial points is nearly automatic. 'Our primary tactic is that I typically take any return I see and drive it, while she moves in aggressively. This is how we score many of our points,' he explained. This dynamic 'drive-and-crash' strategy, often referred to as shake and bake, has become a hallmark of their performance in high-stakes situations. 'We both agree on that play in tight scenarios,' Johns added.
These comments come on the heels of their recent triumphs at the Carvana PPA Masters and the PPA Pickleball Indoor National Championships, which solidified their status as leading competitors. However, they did encounter a rare defeat at the Carvana Mesa Cup, losing in mixed doubles to Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin. Despite this setback, their partnership remains robust, built on deep trust. Johns even suggested that if they were to compete in men's doubles, Waters could lead them to the finals.
Johns' reflections highlight the clarity, trust, and strategic synergy that characterize his collaboration with Waters, particularly in critical match moments.
