Ben Curran Ruled Out of Test Series Against South Africa Due to Injury
Ben Curran's Injury Update
Zimbabwe's opening batsman, Ben Curran, will miss the upcoming Test series against South Africa due to a hand injury. The left-handed player suffered a fracture in his right hand after being struck by a delivery from Kagiso Rabada during the second day of a warm-up match. This incident occurred while he was batting in the fifth over, leading to immediate medical attention on the field. Following treatment, he underwent an X-ray that confirmed the fracture, forcing him to retire hurt after scoring just 4 runs. Fortunately, he is expected to avoid surgery, but his recovery is projected to take approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
Curran's Test Career and Recent Performance
Having made his Test debut in December 2024, Curran has participated in six Test matches to date, with his last appearance being in the previous outing. He has also played six One Day Internationals but has yet to feature in a T20 International. Known for his role as an opener in red-ball cricket, he continued this position during the recent tour match.
Match Highlights and Weather Impact
In the practice match, South Africa managed to score 313 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 79 overs. Rabada showcased his pace bowling skills, dismissing Brian Bennett after Curran's injury. Marco Jansen shared the new ball, while Lungi Ngidi troubled the batsmen later in the day, even breaking Nick Welch's bat.
The match faced significant disruptions due to rain, with the first day completely washed out and no play expected on the third day until at least the second session.
Upcoming Matches for Both Teams
Due to these interruptions, South Africa will head to London for the World Test Championship Final against Australia with limited match practice. This final is scheduled to commence on June 11 at Lord's. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will return home to prepare for their two-Test series against South Africa starting June 28 in Bulawayo. Additionally, they will host a T20I tri-series featuring South Africa and New Zealand, followed by more matches against New Zealand and Afghanistan later in the year.
