Belgium's journey in the group stage began with a challenging 1-1 draw against Egypt, followed by a goalless stalemate with Iran. However, they bounced back impressively, defeating New Zealand 5-1 in their final group match, securing a spot in the round of 32. In a thrilling encounter, they overcame Senegal 3-2, showcasing their resilience.

After falling behind to goals from Habib Diarra (24th minute) and Ismaila Sarr (51st minute), Belgium's Romelu Lukaku (86th minute) and Youri Tielemans (89th minute) turned the tide, pushing the match into extra time.

Tielemans converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review for a foul by Lamine Camara, marking one of the tournament's most unforgettable victories. His penalty, scored in the 124th minute and 44th second, set a new record for the latest goal in FIFA World Cup history.
