BCCI to Review Indian Team's Disappointing T20 Performance: What's Next for Coach Gambhir?

The BCCI is set to conduct a review meeting following the Indian cricket team's disappointing T20 series losses against Ireland and England. Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the meeting will focus on performance assessment without impulsive decisions regarding coach Gautam Gambhir's future. Despite the team's struggles, Gambhir's position appears secure due to his contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup. The review aims to address the team's shortcomings and strategize for improvement, especially after a series of unwanted records under Gambhir's leadership. As the team prepares for the ODI series, questions about player selection and communication within the squad remain critical.

BCCI Plans Review Meeting After T20 Series Losses

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a review meeting to discuss the Indian cricket team's disappointing performances in the recent T20 series against Ireland and England, as stated by secretary Devajit Saikia. This meeting will take place after the conclusion of the ODI series on July 19, with Saikia emphasizing that the Board will avoid making any 'knee-jerk' reactions.

The Indian squad faced a 0-2 defeat against Ireland and is currently trailing 0-3 against England, with one match remaining on Friday.

Despite the team's struggles, it appears that head coach Gautam Gambhir's position is secure for now, as he is contracted with the BCCI until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Saikia mentioned that the BCCI is closely monitoring the T20 team's performance, which has not met expectations during the ongoing series against England. He assured that the review will focus on overall performance without impulsive decisions.

He added, 'This is not an unusual situation and can occur in international cricket. We view it as a temporary setback. After the ODI series concludes on July 19, we will convene with key team members to analyze what went wrong in England. We are optimistic that the team will regain its form during the ODI series.'

Saikia also clarified that the review meeting will strictly address team performance and potential improvements, with no other topics on the agenda.

Under Gambhir's leadership, the Indian team has faced several 'unwanted firsts,' including a 0-3 Test series whitewash and an ODI series loss at home to New Zealand, as well as the first-ever T20I series defeat against Ireland. A potential 0-4 whitewash in T20Is against England would be particularly concerning.

The review meeting is expected to include Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. However, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer may miss the meeting as he is scheduled to travel to Zimbabwe for a three-match series.

Similar review meetings have been conducted following disappointing series against New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.

It has only been four months since India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title under Gambhir's guidance, leading many to believe that a coach with two ICC trophies to his name will not be dismissed lightly.

However, the current team, now captained by Shreyas Iyer, appears to be struggling compared to its previous form.

Gambhir, while not part of the selection committee, has significant influence over the playing eleven, especially in a squad lacking superstars.

Questions have arisen regarding the decision to exclude Sanju Samson from the Zimbabwe T20 series, particularly when he was replaced by 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Recent discussions about Samson's exclusion have resurfaced quotes from an earlier interview where he mentioned Gambhir's assurance that he would only be dropped after a series of poor performances.

Following a match where India was bowled out for 76, Gambhir stated he had a 'conversation' with Samson but did not disclose details, raising questions about the clarity of communication.

The inconsistency in team selection during the tour has also been criticized, with six different playing elevens used across six T20I matches in Ireland and England.

It is widely known that Gambhir's relationship with key players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is strained, and these frequent changes have created uncertainty among players, leading them to play cautiously rather than freely.

Another point of contention is Gambhir's insistence on including certain players, such as Washington Sundar, in the T20 setup.

Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta, currently in the UK as a broadcaster, believes that with two years remaining, Gambhir and the management should explore a wider pool of players.

'While it is frustrating and disappointing, there is a larger picture to consider. Experimenting with players is essential, as young players may struggle to adapt to different conditions. The approach to T20 in the UK differs significantly from that in India, particularly during the Powerplay phase,' Dasgupta remarked.
