BCCI Takes Action Against Rajasthan Royals for IPL Controversies
BCCI Responds to Rajasthan Royals' Controversies
Following two significant controversies involving the Rajasthan Royals (RR) during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its dissatisfaction and urged teams to uphold the league's reputation. Devajit Saikia, the board's secretary, indicated that disciplinary measures would be taken against players and teams that breach regulations. While addressing the media at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, coinciding with the announcement of India's squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Saikia mentioned that the board is considering various punitive options for teams that violate the rules. “We are looking into different ways to address teams that do not adhere to the norms. We will implement actions, but we need to review the terms and conditions before making decisions on team conduct,” Saikia stated. He emphasized that maintaining decorum is essential for preserving the IPL's image, stating, “It is not just about the players or officials; the entire team must uphold certain standards to ensure the IPL's reputation remains intact. Therefore, we will be making decisions and taking necessary actions,” he added.
Rajasthan Royals Under Scrutiny
Rajasthan Royals Face Heat
The Rajasthan Royals have found themselves in the spotlight due to two incidents this season. In a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the team's manager, Romi Bhinder, was seen using a mobile phone in the dugout, violating the Player And Match Official Area (PMOA) regulations. Subsequently, during a game against PBKS at Mullanpur, captain Riyan Parag was caught on camera vaping in the dressing room. As a result, Bhinder received a fine of ₹1 lakh, while Parag was penalized 25% of his match fees and received one demerit point.
Legal Implications for Riyan Parag
Will Riyan Parag Face Police Action?
Parag's situation has attracted legal attention, as vaping is prohibited in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA), 2019. This law bans the 'production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage, and advertisement of electronic cigarettes' to protect public health. When asked if the Punjab police had taken any action against Parag or contacted the BCCI, Saikia clarified that there was no such development. “No. There is no such situation,” the BCCI secretary confirmed.
