BCCI Moves Test Match from Delhi to Kolkata Amid Pollution Concerns

BCCI's Decision to Change Venue

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reversed its earlier plan to host a Test match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi this November. The issue of air pollution in Delhi during winter has been a significant concern, particularly as the Air Quality Index (AQI) can reach alarming levels.

Initially, the BCCI scheduled a Test match between India and South Africa from November 14 to 18 in Delhi, despite the known pollution issues. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had previously remarked that pollution is not a yearly problem when questioned about the scheduling.

However, the board has reconsidered its stance and decided to relocate the first Test match against South Africa to Kolkata's Eden Gardens. In turn, the second Test against West Indies will now take place in Delhi instead of Kolkata.

A source from the BCCI shared with a Media House:

The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi will now host the second Test between India and West Indies from October 10-14, which was initially set for Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Kolkata will now host the first Test between India and South Africa from November 14-18.

In December 2017, Sri Lankan players faced similar challenges when they played a Test match in Delhi, opting to wear masks due to the severe pollution. Their struggles were highlighted when players became ill on the field, drawing attention to the health risks posed by the environment.

Health experts have warned that engaging in outdoor sports during Delhi's winter can have detrimental effects on health due to pollution levels. Considering these factors, the BCCI has opted to move the Test match to October.

This decision aims to protect players from the potential health risks associated with high pollution levels during that time of year. The BCCI is committed to prioritizing the health and well-being of its players. A formal announcement regarding this venue change will be made shortly.
