BCCI's Decision on Mustafizur Rahman
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This confirmation came from BCCI Secretary Devjit Sakiya in an exclusive conversation, putting an end to the speculation surrounding the bowler's future in the league.
Mustafizur was acquired by KKR during the mini-auction for IPL 2026 in December 2025 for a staggering ₹9.20 crores, which immediately drew attention. However, this signing soon became embroiled in controversy, facing opposition from political circles and various religious groups. The protests intensified in the days following the auction.
In a special interview with a media outlet, Sakiya elaborated on the board's decision, confirming that the franchise has been formally directed to part ways with the Bangladeshi international player.

Sakiya stated, "In light of recent developments, the BCCI has instructed KKR to release their player, Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh."
He further added, "The BCCI has also indicated that if they request a replacement, it will be permitted."
The controversy surrounding Mustafizur's inclusion escalated when BJP leader Kaustav Bagchi publicly objected to the participation of Bangladeshi players in IPL matches held in Kolkata. Following his statements, there was significant backlash, with some critics even targeting KKR's co-owner and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for supporting this signing during the auction.

While the BCCI has refrained from commenting directly on the political reactions, Sakiya's remarks made it clear that the board assessed the entire situation before intervening. The directive to release Mustafizur is viewed as a precautionary measure aimed at avoiding further complications as preparations for IPL 2026 ramp up.
From a cricketing perspective, this decision reduces KKR's foreign fast-bowling resources. Mustafizur, known for his variations and effectiveness in limited-overs cricket, was expected to play a crucial role, especially on slower pitches. However, the BCCI has assured the franchise that they will be allowed to sign a replacement player if they wish.
