Bayern Munich's Impressive Start
Cincinnati [Ohio], June 16: Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich launched their FIFA Club World Cup journey with an astonishing 10-0 victory over Auckland City at TQL Stadium on Sunday evening.
Among the standout performers, Thomas Muller was one of three players to net two goals, while Jamal Musiala showcased his talent with a remarkable hat-trick.
Kingsley Coman initiated the scoring spree with a close-range header just six minutes into the match. The German powerhouse quickly intensified their assault, with Sacha Boey (18th minute), Michael Olise (20th), and Coman (21st) adding three more goals in rapid succession, ensuring a comfortable lead well before the 30-minute mark.
As the first half drew to a close, Muller, who has been with the club for 25 years, joined the scoring with a well-placed volley in the 45th minute, followed by Olise's long-range left-footed strike in the 45th+3 minute, bringing the halftime score to 6-0.
The second half was dominated by Jamal, who opened with a stunning long-range shot in the 67th minute, followed by a penalty conversion in the 73rd minute. He completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Conor Tracey. Muller capped off the scoring in the 89th minute, pushing the tally into double digits.
After the match, Bayern's coach Vincent Kompany remarked, "We don’t need accolades right now; we simply executed our plan. We approached the game with seriousness. The goal difference in this group is significant, which makes our ten goals crucial for this stage of the tournament."
Muller added, "The stadium was packed, and the fans were fully engaged, celebrating each goal with us. After my last goal, I enjoyed a wonderful moment with them. They supported us wholeheartedly. Overall, it was a fantastic start. We were the favorites, and we fulfilled that expectation. We aim to maintain this momentum," he concluded.
In another match under the hot sun, UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain secured a 4-0 victory against Atletico de Madrid.
After clinching the Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and UEFA Champions League titles in a historic 2024/25 season, the French team began their quest for global dominance with a low drive from outside the box by Fabian Ruiz in the 19th minute. Despite an early effort from Julian Alvarez, Atletico struggled to penetrate PSG's defense.
Vitinha's goal in the 45th minute doubled PSG's lead by halftime.
Although Atletico made several attempts, it was PSG substitute Senny Mayulu who extended the lead to three goals in the 87th minute, effectively eliminating any chance of a comeback. In added time, a handball by Robin Le Normand allowed PSG to score again, with Lee Kangin converting the penalty effortlessly.
PSG defender Marquinhos stated, "We can never predict the outcome of a match, especially against a team like Atletico. Our squad demonstrated its strength. Yes, we won the Champions League, but today we reaffirmed our intensity. We must remain humble, continue to defend, attack, and keep progressing in the same direction."
Atletico star Antoine Griezmann commented, "We anticipated a game similar to the one at Parc des Princes last November, but the heat made it more challenging. Some plays could have favored us, but they went in their favor. We need to keep working. We were well-prepared, and it’s disappointing."
