Bangladesh Cricket Team Penalized for Slow Over-Rate Despite Victory Over New Zealand
Bangladesh Fined for Slow Over-Rate in ODI
Dhaka: The Bangladesh cricket team has incurred a fine of 10% of their match fee due to a slow over-rate during the second ODI against New Zealand held at Shere Bangla National Stadium.
As reported by a press release from the ICC, match referee Andy Pycroft from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel imposed this penalty after it was found that Mehidy Hasan Miraz's team was two overs short of the required rate, even after accounting for time allowances.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players face a deduction of 5% of their match fee for each over not completed in the allotted time. Consequently, the two-over deficit led to the 10% fine.
Mehidy acknowledged the violation and accepted the penalty, which eliminated the need for a formal hearing. The charge was raised by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, along with third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul.
Despite the fine, Bangladesh showcased a commendable performance on the field, achieving a six-wicket victory at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
New Zealand, batting first, struggled to gain momentum and were dismissed for 198 runs in 48.4 overs. Opener Nick Kelly was the standout performer with a resilient 83 runs off 102 balls, while Muhammad Abbas contributed 19 runs.
Bangladesh's bowling was led by Nahid Rana, who delivered an impressive performance with figures of 5/32 in his 10 overs, earning him the Player of the Match title. Shoriful Islam supported with two wickets, while Taskin Ahmed, Soumya Sarkar, and Rishad Hossain each took one wicket.
In response, Bangladesh successfully chased down the target of 199 runs, finishing with six wickets in hand and 87 balls to spare. Although they faced early losses with Saif Hassan and Sarkar dismissed cheaply, a vital 120-run partnership between Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto stabilized the innings.
Tanzid was the top scorer with a brisk 76 runs off 58 balls, while Shanto added a composed 50 before retiring hurt. Towhid Hridoy then guided the team to victory with an unbeaten 30.
For New Zealand, Jayden Lennox took two wickets, while Will O’Rourke and Nathan Smith each claimed one.
This victory allowed Bangladesh to level the three-match series at 1-1, with the final match scheduled to take place in Chattogram on Thursday.
