Bangladesh Cricket Board Takes Over Chattogram Royals Franchise Ahead of BPL 2023
BCB Assumes Control of Chattogram Royals
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stepped in to manage the Chattogram Royals franchise of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after the original owner opted to withdraw just one day before the tournament's 12th edition kicks off on December 26, according to reports.
Withdrawal Due to Sponsorship Issues
Triangle Services Limited, which acquired the franchise from the BCB, announced their exit on Wednesday, citing insufficient interest from sponsors as the reason for their decision. BPL chairman Iftekhar Rahman stated, "They submitted a letter to the BCB just three hours ago, leading us to officially take over the team. This situation was unexpected. The franchise mentioned in their letter that media reports hindered their ability to secure sponsors. We are committed to maintaining integrity and ensuring player payments this season, avoiding issues like those faced by the Rajshahi franchise last year."
Challenges in BPL's History
Since its inception in 2012, the BPL has encountered various payment-related challenges. Although the situation improved from 2016 to 2019, issues resurfaced last season. A notable incident involved players from Durbar Rajshahi boycotting a training session and a match due to delayed payments, which necessitated government intervention.
New Management Appointed by BCB
In light of these ongoing challenges, the BCB has appointed Habibul Bashar as the team director, Mizanur Rahman Babul as head coach, and Nafees Iqbal as team manager. This move comes as the T20 league continues to grapple with its reputation. Despite calls for a comprehensive overhaul of the BPL, the BCB has decided to stick with the original schedule for December and January, even as it struggles to attract new franchises for the upcoming five-year cycle.
Controversies Surrounding the Franchise
The Chattogram Royals, one of four new franchises introduced this season, have recently been embroiled in controversy. Reports indicate that two individuals flagged in the BCB's independent inquiry into corruption are associated with the franchise, as stated by team owner Kayum Rashed in an interview. The Royals are set to face off against the Noakhali Express, another new team, in their opening match in Sylhet.
