BCB Takes Action Following Player Backlash

On Thursday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the dismissal of Najmul Islam from his position as the head of the finance committee. This decision came after senior players of the national team revolted against his derogatory remarks. The controversy erupted when Najmul reiterated concerns regarding the players' compensation, dismissing their worries after Bangladesh's refusal to participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 in India. He stated that players would not receive any compensation since they have yet to win an ICC tournament and have not proven their worth.

The backlash from this statement led to the Cricket Writers Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) demanding his immediate removal from the BCB. Under pressure from players and the public, the BCB was compelled to take action, resulting in Najmul's removal from his role. In a statement released on Thursday evening, the BCB confirmed, 'After reviewing recent events and in the interest of the organization, the BCB president has decided to relieve Najmul Islam of his duties as the head of the finance committee effective immediately.'

The statement further indicated that until further notice, the BCB president would assume the responsibilities of the acting head of the finance committee. The BCB reiterated that the welfare of cricketers remains its top priority. The board is fully committed to upholding the respect and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction. Additionally, the BCB issued a show-cause notice to Najmul. In a press release on Thursday, the BCB expressed regret over the offensive comments made by a board member and acknowledged the concerns raised by these remarks, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, respect for cricketers, and the values that nurture the sport.
