Viktor Axelsen's Retirement Shocks Badminton Community
Viktor Axelsen Bids Farewell to Badminton
The badminton world is in disbelief following the announcement of Viktor Axelsen's retirement at just 32 years old. The Danish star, celebrated as one of the sport's greatest players, has stepped away due to ongoing back problems. After undergoing surgery in April of the previous year, Axelsen found himself unable to train or compete at the elite level, with his last appearance being at the French Open in October 2025.
Indian badminton coach Vimal Kumar expressed his sorrow over Axelsen's decision, stating, "I am deeply saddened to hear about Viktor Axelsen stepping away from the sport due to persistent back issues." Vimal, who is also the Director of the Centre for Badminton Excellence, recalled their recent conversation where Axelsen shared his concerns about his recovery progress.
Vimal reminisced about first hearing of Axelsen nearly twenty years ago from Morten Frost, who had high hopes for the young talent. "Viktor not only lived up to that belief - he surpassed it," Vimal noted, highlighting Axelsen's impressive accolades, including two Olympic gold medals and multiple World Championship titles.
A Towering Legacy
During his peak, Axelsen held the world number one ranking for over 100 consecutive weeks, a record only surpassed by Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei. He retired as the reigning Olympic champion, having defended his title at the Paris 2024 Games, and is the only player to have won five season-ending BWF World Tour Finals.
His remarkable consistency is evident in his 27 BWF World Tour titles, the highest in men's singles history. Since 2018, he participated in 33 finals, losing only six, and remained unbeaten in 2022 with 39 consecutive victories.
Challenges Ahead for Denmark
Vimal pointed out that Axelsen's retirement poses a significant challenge for Denmark, which is struggling to find new talent to fill the void left by him and Anders Antonsen. "His retirement is a significant loss - not just for Denmark, but for European badminton as a whole," Vimal remarked.
He expressed hope that the Badminton World Federation would consider involving Axelsen in a developmental role within the sport, emphasizing the need for his expertise.
A True Ambassador for the Sport
Axelsen's global popularity is attributed to his dedication, which even led him to learn Chinese to better connect with players from China, a dominant force in badminton. Vimal praised Axelsen's ability to bridge cultural gaps and his progressive ideas for the sport's growth.
"I truly hope he remains closely involved with badminton in the future, perhaps contributing to its administration and direction. Thank you, Viktor, for everything you have given to badminton. Wishing you strength, happiness, and great success in all your future endeavors," Vimal concluded.
