Viktor Axelsen's Retirement Announcement

Viktor Axelsen, a former World No.1 and two-time Olympic gold medalist, has officially declared his retirement from badminton. The 32-year-old athlete has been battling chronic back problems, which ultimately led him to end his illustrious career. Axelsen is celebrated as one of badminton's most accomplished players, having secured consecutive gold medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. His retirement news has left many fans around the globe in disbelief. In a statement to Badminton Europe, Axelsen explained that this decision followed discussions with his medical team. “As many are aware, I have faced ongoing back issues. After undergoing surgery in April of last year and enduring a lengthy rehabilitation, I encountered a setback in October. Since then, I have been unable to compete or train at the necessary level due to pain, which has compelled me to make this incredibly tough choice.”

He further elaborated that the decision was made in conjunction with the surgeon who performed his previous operation and the doctors he has been consulting. They indicated that the pain he is experiencing might necessitate another surgery, and if complications arise, a more serious procedure could be required. Regardless, this would hinder his ability to compete at the elite level. “My body is signaling that it’s time to stop, and I must heed my doctors' advice,” he stated.

Axelsen expressed that making this decision was profoundly challenging and at times felt unjust. However, he acknowledged the importance of listening to his body. Reflecting on his career, he shared, “This decision has been incredibly tough and at times felt unfair. Nevertheless, my body has served me well over the years, and I consider it a privilege to have played, trained, and triumphed in numerous major tournaments at the highest level. Few individuals get to experience what I have and meet so many remarkable people. Therefore, I look back on my career with joy.”
