PV Sindhu's Harrowing Experience in Dubai Amid Flight Suspensions
PV Sindhu Returns to India After Dubai Ordeal
Indian badminton star PV Sindhu made her way back to India on the morning of March 3. She was en route to Birmingham for the All England Open 2026 when she found herself stranded in Dubai due to flight cancellations on February 28, triggered by the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. In an exclusive interview with Navika Kumar, Group Editor-in-Chief of a prominent news media outlet, the two-time Olympic medalist shared her frightening experience. “I never anticipated this situation. We arrived in Dubai around 1 PM, and shortly after, we were informed that all flights were suspended. Just two hours earlier, some Indian players had successfully transited to Birmingham,” Sindhu recounted.

“It was shocking to learn that everything was halted so abruptly. We were left wondering what would happen next. The staff informed us that flights were suspended indefinitely, which added to our anxiety as we monitored the news. We were instructed to wait at the airport, but as time passed, it became clear that something was amiss. Immigration was closed, preventing anyone from exiting, and we were confined to the gate area. After a couple of hours, they gradually reopened immigration, allowing us to access a transit hotel. Our coach remained at the airport, and we were in contact with him. Suddenly, he messaged us about a loud noise he heard nearby—possibly an explosion or a drone. The situation was terrifying, and we were concerned for his safety,” she explained.
Sindhu acknowledged the support she received from the Indian Consulate General in Dubai and the Indian government during this crisis. She mentioned receiving calls from the Sports Ministry, expressing gratitude for their assistance. “The Indian Consulate General and the government were incredibly supportive. I received calls from the sports ministry, and Ramon Nairu also reached out to check on my situation. The media was also concerned, which helped us feel supported and ultimately return home safely,” she added. Unfortunately, Sindhu was unable to compete in the All England Championships, while Lakshya Sen managed to reach Birmingham in time and began his campaign with a victory over Shi Yu Qi.
