Tokyo, July 19: In a remarkable display of skill, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu defeated local favorite Akane Yamaguchi in straight sets, securing her first Super 750 title at the Japan Open on Sunday.

The 31-year-old made history by becoming the first Indian to win this prestigious tournament, showcasing a blend of aggressive play and strategic finesse to achieve a 21-17, 21-17 victory over the three-time world champion, breaking a 19-month title drought.

"I'm overwhelmed with joy. It's been 19 months since my last title win. While reaching the final is significant, standing on the podium with the gold medal is an entirely different experience. This victory boosts my confidence immensely. I owe my gratitude to my coach, my family, my support team, and my husband," Sindhu expressed after her win.

Her last title was at the Syed Modi International in 2024, and this latest achievement marks her most significant win since clinching the World Championships in 2019. She also won the Singapore Open Super 500 title in 2022.

Yamaguchi was competing in her sixth Japan Open final, and Sindhu had not secured a victory against her in a completed match for four years. Their previous encounter at the Malaysia Open earlier this year ended prematurely when Yamaguchi retired after the first game. Sindhu's last full-match win against her was at the Thailand Open in 2022.

However, on Sunday, Sindhu took control from the beginning. She expertly managed the forecourt, opting for precise attacks over sheer power, and consistently countered Yamaguchi's attempts to regain momentum.

In addition to her signature powerful smashes, Sindhu's skillful net play was crucial. She kept the shuttlecock close to the net, compelling Yamaguchi to lift it, which allowed Sindhu to unleash her characteristic cross-court and body smashes.
