New Delhi, Nov 4: Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu has officially qualified for the BWF World Tour Finals, as confirmed by the Badminton World Federation on Wednesday.
The prestigious tournament is scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from December 9 to 13. Sindhu will face off against familiar competitors, including An Se Young, Akane Yamaguchi, Wang Zhi Yi, and Chen Yu Fei, who have also secured their spots for this year’s event.
This tournament, which occurs in non-Thomas Cup years, features the top eight players or pairs based on the year-end world rankings. Alongside Sindhu, five other women’s singles players have qualified: Japan's Tomoka Miyazaki, Nozomi Okuhara, Ratchanok Intanon, and Indonesia's Putri Kusuma Wardani, as well as Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong and Denmark's Line Christophersen, who are vying for the remaining three spots.
This marks Sindhu's sixth appearance in the World Tour Finals and her first since 2021. Although she qualified in 2022, she had to withdraw due to an injury. Notably, she remains the only Indian to have clinched a BWF World Tour Finals women’s singles title, achieving this feat in 2018 against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
Her recent victory at the Hylo Open was pivotal in securing her place in the season-ending finals. The Super 500 title earned her 9,200 points, elevating her to sixth place in the latest BWF World Rankings.
The Hylo Open title was Sindhu’s second of the year, following her triumph at the Japan Open Super 750 in July, marking her first individual title since December 2024. In total, she has now won seven BWF World Tour titles. Prior to the Hylo Open, she reached the finals at the French Open but was defeated by world No. 1 and reigning Olympic and World champion An Se-young from Korea.
This season is significant for Sindhu as it is the first since 2022 in which she has secured multiple BWF World Tour titles.
Shortly after her success at the Hylo Open, Sindhu opted to skip the Korea Open and Japan Masters to focus on recovery and preparation for the BWF World Tour Finals.
