Sydney, May 12: P.V. Sindhu, currently ranked World No. 10, has successfully reached the semifinals of the Australian Open taking place at the Quaycentre in Sydney, following a commanding win against Chen Su Yu from Chinese Taipei.
The match concluded in just 27 minutes, with the third-seeded Indian dominating both games to secure a decisive 21-6, 21-9 victory. This marks Sindhu's second semifinal appearance this season, having previously reached the last four at the Malaysia Open 2026.
In the semifinals, Sindhu will face top seed and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi. This matchup will be their 29th encounter, with Sindhu leading their head-to-head record at 15-13, although Yamaguchi has triumphed in four of their last five meetings.
This achievement serves as a significant confidence boost for Sindhu, as it is her second semifinal appearance in eight BWF World Tour events this season, following a period of inconsistent performances. Meanwhile, young Indian player Tanvi Sharma's impressive run came to an end in the quarterfinals, where she was outmatched by Yamaguchi, who showcased exceptional defense and precision.
Despite the disappointment of her quarterfinal exit, Tanvi's journey highlighted her potential, as she delivered several strong performances and notable upsets, marking a promising step in her badminton career.
Yamaguchi secured her place in the semifinals with a 21-14, 21-14 victory over Tanvi Sharma in 32 minutes.
In men's doubles, the Indian duo of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun had to retire during the second game against their opponents from Chinese Taipei.
Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu, along with World Junior Championships runner-up Tanvi Sharma and the men's doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun, advanced to the quarterfinals. Tanvi continued her strong performance with a 21-12, 21-15 win over Malvika Bansod, while Sindhu overcame fellow Indian Isharani Baruah with a score of 22-20, 21-12. Hariharan and Arjun also progressed by defeating Australia's Michael Owen and Dylan Soedjasa 21-17, 21-17.
