Guwahati, Sept 18: Assam achieved a remarkable feat by clinching all four team titles at the Yonex-Sunrise North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship 2026 held in Shillong. The senior men's and women's teams also earned their spots in the 2027 National Games as champions of the North East zone.
Following the victories of Assam's junior boys and girls teams in their finals earlier in the day, the senior teams completed the clean sweep on Thursday.
At the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex's Indoor Stadium, the men's team triumphed over Manipur with a score of 3-1 in the final. Although Shubhankar Dutta lost the first singles match, Assam rallied to win the next three matches and secure the championship.
Tanmay Bikash Barua and Orijit Chaliha both won their singles matches, while Suraj Goala and Swarnaraj Bora clinched the doubles match.
In the women's final, Assam defeated Mizoram 3-0. Ashmita Chaliha and Muyuri Barman won their singles matches, and Asmita teamed up with Manali Bora to win the doubles.
In the semifinals held on Tuesday night, Assam's men's team overcame Mizoram, while the women's team triumphed over Arunachal Pradesh.
The junior boys also secured a decisive 2-0 victory against Arunachal Pradesh in their final, which lasted just 57 minutes.
Bornil Aakash Changmai won the singles match and later partnered with Anayan Bora to win the doubles.
Assam's junior girls team defeated Mizoram 2-1. Gargi Saikia gave Assam the lead with a singles win, but Bhavishya Changmai and Abhika Borgohain lost the doubles match. Naimikha Saikia then clinched the decisive third match to secure the title for Assam.
The championship will proceed until September 19, featuring singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events across men's, women's, boys', and girls' categories following the team events.
