The much-awaited Baba Lakhdata Football Tournament commenced on Friday evening at the Government Senior Secondary School grounds in Kakira, Chamba, despite heavy rainfall. The Bakloh Football Association organized the event, which was inaugurated at 5 PM by the school's Principal, Anup Sharma, who served as the chief guest.
Sharma was welcomed with a ceremonial bouquet and a memento before officially declaring the tournament open. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork, and leadership among young people.
He stated, “Sports extend beyond winning or losing; they instill values of perseverance, honesty, and respect for fair play. Each match serves as a lesson, and true athletes are those who commit themselves sincerely and with discipline.”

The Baba Lakhdata Football Tournament is set to take place from July 23 to July 25, featuring nine teams from the Chamba, Kangra, and Pathankot districts. The competition promises thrilling matches as regional teams vie for the prestigious title.

According to Gaurav Thapa, also known as Parul, Secretary of the Chilama Lakhdata Football Association, this tournament boasts a rich history spanning 35 years. It was originally initiated by Shivu Bhai of 2/4 Bazaar in honor of Baba Lakhdata at the Chilama ground. However, due to ongoing construction at the football ground this year, matches are being held at Kakira School instead.
Thapa emphasized the broader goal of the event: “Our mission is not only to promote football but also to inspire youth towards sports and divert society from drug addiction. This tournament celebrates healthy living and community spirit.”
