Ayush Mhatre Reflects on His Journey with CSK and Aspirations for India
Ayush Mhatre's Journey with CSK
Ayush Mhatre, the talented batsman and captain of India's U19 World Cup-winning team, recently shared insights about his experience with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during an interview on JioStar's 'TATA IPL: Dream On'.
Having played 10 matches for CSK, Mhatre accumulated 314 runs with an impressive average of 31.40 and a strike rate exceeding 180, including two half-centuries. He recounted how he was selected as an injury replacement for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. Mhatre noted that the auction coincided with the ACC U19 Asia Cup in December 2024, where he initially went unsold. However, he maintained a positive outlook on this setback. While training at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he received a call from CSK, leading to a two-day camp with the team.
Mhatre's Reflections on His Selection
"The Asia Cup was ongoing while the auction took place. Although I hoped to be picked, I focused on the Asia Cup as my primary goal. As they say, everything happens for a reason. While at the NCA, I got a call from CSK asking to see me bat in the nets, which led to my selection," Mhatre explained.
Mentorship from Legends: Dhoni and Rohit
Mhatre also reminisced about his first meeting with MS Dhoni, the legendary CSK captain, who advised him to play his natural game while tempering his aggressive instincts. "They informed me I could play against LSG, but I faced travel issues. When I finally joined the team in Mumbai, everyone was welcoming. Mahi bhai encouraged me to play my shots but not to swing at every ball, emphasizing that I should continue my successful approach from the past few years," he shared.
In his debut season, Mhatre scored 240 runs in seven innings, averaging 34.28 with a strike rate of 188.97, including a top score of 94 against RCB. His dynamic batting style revitalized CSK's aging lineup.
Inspiration from Rohit Sharma
Mhatre expressed his admiration for Rohit Sharma, his favorite cricketer, who offered him valuable advice after their IPL match. "Rohit spoke to me kindly, praised my batting, and provided tips on handling short balls. He reassured me that I could reach out to him anytime, which helped ease my nerves," he said.
Aiming for the Indian Team
"Every aspiring cricketer dreams of representing India. Wearing the jersey during the Under-19 World Cup was a memorable moment for me. I didn’t feel pressured about legacy; my focus is on playing for India, maintaining my place in the team, and performing consistently. Whether in the Ranji Trophy or IPL, I aim to excel without fixating on results, as they will come naturally," Mhatre concluded.
Despite facing challenges leading up to the U19 World Cup, Mhatre found his form at the right moment, scoring half-centuries against Afghanistan and England in the semifinal and final, respectively. Over seven matches, he amassed 214 runs at an average of 30.57 and took seven wickets, including a three-wicket haul against Pakistan.
