Pat Cummins led the bowling attack, achieving a remarkable milestone of 300 Test wickets by claiming six wickets in this innings.

Chasing Australia's total of 212, South Africa faced an early setback as Aiden Markram was dismissed in the very first over by a spectacular delivery from Mitchell Starc. The Australian skipper dismissed Wiaan Mulder and then sent Tristan Stubbs back to the pavilion with a brilliant delivery from Josh Hazlewood. By the end of Day 1, South Africa found themselves struggling at 43/4. However, Day 2 saw a resurgence as Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham formed a solid partnership.
