Atiqa Mir Shines in FIA European Championship Debut
Impressive Debut Performance
Indian racing prodigy Atiqa Mir made a remarkable entrance in her FIA European Championship debut, securing an impressive sixth place in Race 2, showcasing her talent in the elite karting arena.
Navigating Tough Challenges
Recognized for her exceptional skills, the 11-year-old was granted a wildcard entry for the second round of the championship. Despite facing formidable competition, she adeptly tackled numerous challenges posed by seasoned drivers. As India's first driver supported by the Formula 1 Academy and the top-ranked female in the OKNJ class (ages 12-14) according to FIA rankings, Atiqa faced the more powerful OKJ category and the complex Maxxis tyres for the first time, competing against 92 highly experienced racers.
Fighting Spirit on Display
In a competitive field where qualifying positions are crucial, Atiqa demonstrated her determination by advancing to the Super Heats of the FIA-sanctioned series, starting from the 15th position on the grid. Her best finish of the weekend was sixth place in Race 2, and she also achieved the Fastest Lap in Race 5. Despite encountering a few crashes and penalties, the young racer from Jammu and Kashmir successfully qualified for the Super Heats, capturing the attention of the entire paddock.
Aiming for the Stars
By voluntarily competing in a higher age category, Atiqa proved her capability and gained invaluable experience for the upcoming season. She aspires to become the first female driver in Formula 1 since 1992 and is set to participate in the FIA World Cup later this year.
Reflecting on a Memorable Weekend
Reflecting on her experience, Atiqa described the weekend as a dream come true, expressing satisfaction with her pace and the lessons learned from competing against top-tier drivers. "Driving in an FIA series is truly special; it’s a dream come true for me. I maintained good pace throughout the weekend, raced hard, and learned a lot. Competing with these drivers is exhilarating," she stated.
Support from Family
Atiqa's father, Asif Mir, a former racer himself, praised her performance given the significant challenges she faced. "Atiqa delivered a standout performance as a Wild Card entry, being one of the youngest competitors in her debut category. She managed the increased power, different tyres, and a new team exceptionally well. Qualifying 15th in a large field and finishing sixth in one of the heat races were significant achievements," Asif remarked.
Upcoming Competitions
Later this month, Atiqa will head to Greece to participate in the second round of the COTFA International.
