Ashwin Predicts Big Night for Klaasen Ahead of IPL Opener
Ashwin's Insights on Klaasen's Potential
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) season kicks off with the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin expressed optimism about batter Heinrich Klaasen's performance. Despite a lackluster year in T20 cricket, Ashwin believes Klaasen could shine, sharing his thoughts on his YouTube channel, 'Ash ki Baat'.
The SRH lineup boasts formidable talent, featuring openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, followed by Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Liam Livingstone, and Aniket Verma. This powerful batting order has the potential to achieve a remarkable 300-run score if they perform at their best. However, Klaasen's recent form has been inconsistent since stepping back from international cricket. After the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where he scored a valiant fifty but his team fell short, Klaasen has accumulated 1,440 runs in 59 innings across 65 matches, averaging 28.80 with a strike rate of 148.76, including one century and seven fifties. His recent performance in the SA20 season was disappointing, with only 138 runs in seven innings at an average of 19.71 and a strike rate of 128.97, peaking at 29.
On 'Ash ki Baat', Ashwin suggested that while Klaasen could be the standout player for SRH, England's Jacob Bethell might shine for RCB. Bethell had an impressive T20 World Cup, scoring 280 runs in eight innings, highlighted by a stunning 105 off 48 balls in the semifinal against India at Wankhede Stadium. Ashwin remarked, "I have a strange feeling that Klaasen will have a memorable night, even though he hasn't performed well lately. From RCB's perspective, I believe Jacob Bethell will be the key player of the day."
SRH's Recent Dominance Over RCB
Ashwin pointed out that SRH has triumphed over RCB in their last two encounters, posting impressive totals of 231 in the 2025 season at Lucknow, with Ishan Kishan's 94 being a standout performance, and a staggering 287 in Bengaluru during the 2024 season. SRH secured victories in both matches by margins of 42 runs and 25 runs, respectively.
RCB's Bowling Challenges
The all-rounder believes this trend will likely continue, especially with RCB missing key player Hazlewood. He noted, "SRH has had the upper hand over RCB recently, and I expect this match to follow that pattern, particularly since RCB is without Hazlewood. In the previous game in Lucknow, Hazlewood was also absent, if I recall correctly." Ashwin also highlighted that aside from veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar, RCB lacks the depth to effectively manage run leakage in the final overs. He concluded, "RCB has a history of struggling in death overs. If wickets are in hand, stopping runs becomes not just difficult but nearly impossible."
