Sabalenka's Impressive Win at Wimbledon

London [UK], July 7: Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked as the world's top player, has successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon after defeating Elise Mertens, who holds the 19th position in the world rankings, in the round of 16.

In a match held at the All England Club, Sabalenka triumphed over her former doubles partner, Mertens, with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (4). This victory marks Sabalenka's 11th win out of 13 encounters against Mertens, with whom she previously celebrated a Grand Slam title at the US Open six years ago.

The US Open champion is now the sole remaining top-six seed in the women's draw at Wimbledon.

After missing last year's tournament due to injury and facing a ban in 2022 as part of the suspension on Russian and Belarusian athletes following the Ukraine invasion, Sabalenka is now a three-time Grand Slam champion. She is on the verge of claiming her fourth title and her first Wimbledon championship, having reached the semifinals in 2021 and 2023, according to the WTA's official website.

Her next opponent will be Laura Siegemund, 37, who secured her place by defeating Solana Sierra with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

In her latest match, Sabalenka recorded six aces and won 32 out of 38 first-serve points. Both players had 18 unforced errors, but Sabalenka outperformed Mertens with 36 winners, nine more than her opponent.

Sabalenka is in exceptional form during Grand Slam events, having reached the quarterfinals in her last ten appearances. This year alone, she has achieved 16 Grand Slam victories, surpassing all other players, and boasts a total of 46 wins overall, as reported by the WTA's official website.

Elise Mertens, now 29 years old and ranked 19th in the world, is also a formidable player. She recently won the Libema Open and entered this match with a career Wimbledon record of 15-7.
