Anrich Nortje Aims for Test Comeback Ahead of Australia Series
Nortje's Preparations for Test Cricket
Anrich Nortje, the South African fast bowler, is setting his sights on a return to Test cricket. He disclosed that his training commenced well before his selection for the national team. Nortje, who last participated in a Test match in 2023, has been named in South Africa's preliminary squad of 18 players for the upcoming three-match ICC World Test Championship series against Australia, starting on October 9 at Kingsmead, Durban.
Emphasis on Red-Ball Skills
"My preparation has been focused on red-ball cricket for quite some time," Nortje stated, boasting 70 wickets from 19 Test matches. "I have concentrated on honing my skills with the red ball, gradually building my workload in a proper manner to increase my overs," he added, as reported by the ICC.
Much of his training has been self-directed, with guidance from national bowling coach Piet Botha. "I needed to identify areas for improvement in my action and skills, and I've had productive discussions with coach Piet," he mentioned. "The aspects I've been working on include alignments and enhancing the strength and reliability of my action. I've been sharing my progress with coach Piet to ensure everything aligns correctly."
'Test Cap is the Ultimate Goal'
Nortje has established himself as one of South Africa's leading bowlers in white-ball formats. He holds the record for the most wickets by a South African in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history, with 38 wickets in 21 matches, and has taken 56 wickets in 47 T20 internationals at an average of 21.19. His remarkable performance of 4/7 against Sri Lanka in the 2024 tournament remains the best by a South African in the event.
However, he emphasized his passion for Test cricket. "In T20 cricket, you don't dwell on the challenges; you focus on executing your skills. In Tests, you reflect on both the tough and good times, which helps you push through difficult sessions," he explained. "I would be thrilled to don my Test cap again. Growing up, that was the format I aspired to play, and it serves as my motivation during training."
Seeking Redemption Against Australia
The upcoming series against Australia holds special significance for Nortje, as he has only faced them in one Test series, which South Africa lost 2-0 during the 2022-23 tour. He participated in all three matches, claiming seven wickets. "We always aimed to correct our mistakes when facing them at home. It was a challenging series, but I learned a lot and am eager to perform well against them in South Africa," he remarked.
Nortje anticipates that the competition will elevate everyone's performance. "There’s an extra spark, energy, and determination that emerges during such matches. Everyone is eager to excel, and this series is crucial," he noted.
Commendation for the World Test Champions
As the reigning ICC World Test Champions, South Africa enters the series with confidence after defeating Australia in last year's final in London. Nortje expressed admiration for the team and head coach Shukri Conrad. "The team's development over the past few years has been remarkable under coach Shuks. Their performance and approach have been impressive. I hope to contribute positively, even if it's just by a small margin," he concluded.
