Anna Leigh Waters: A New Era in Pickleball

Pickleball is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity, giving rise to a new wave of athletic talent, with Anna Leigh Waters standing out as a prime example. At just 19, she has already made a significant impact both on and off the court, earning recognition as one of the greatest female players in the sport's history. Recently, Waters shared her experiences regarding the emotional hurdles she faced during her early professional career, particularly when older competitors found it difficult to accept defeat against a younger player.

Reflecting on her past, Waters noted, “When I was younger, I didn’t really understand it, but a lot of people were treating me poorly on the court or would get pretty upset [and] call me names.” She further explained, “But now that I’m older, I realize the feelings they must have been going through losing to a 12-year-old. I could see how that could get people to maybe do things that they characteristically wouldn’t do.”

Now, seven years after her debut, Waters holds the title of the world’s top-ranked female player in both singles and doubles, solidifying her status as a leading figure in the sport. Connor Pardoe, a commentator, emphasized her dominance, stating, “It’s her, and there’s not really an argument that it could be anyone else. She wins everything. She’s virtually unbeatable.”

Waters’ achievements extend beyond her performance in tournaments. As reported by Sports Business Journal, she was already making over seven figures before securing significant multi-year endorsement contracts this year with Franklin Sports and Nike, marking her as the first professional pickleball athlete to partner with the renowned sportswear brand.

Her latest triumph occurred at the PPA finals in Southern California, where she clinched both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles while proudly wearing Nike gear throughout the competition. “I remember signing the contract. I said to my mom: ‘How is this even real? Did I actually just do that?” Waters expressed, highlighting her excitement.

As pickleball continues to grow in both commercial and competitive spheres globally, Waters is increasingly recognized as the face of this new era, characterized by youthful talent, expanding sponsorship opportunities, and greater visibility in mainstream sports.
