Anna Leigh Waters: From Criticism to Dominance in Pickleball
Anna Leigh Waters Reflects on Her Journey
Anna Leigh Waters, currently ranked as the top player in the world, has shared insights about her initial experiences in pickleball, where her dynamic playing style was initially viewed as a novelty. In a recent interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, she discussed her rise in the sport and how pickleball has transformed over the years. The 19-year-old athlete gained fame while competing alongside her mother, Leigh Waters, and noted that their approach differed from the conventional styles seen at tournaments.
“In our local community, we received a warm welcome and strong support, but at tournaments, commentators and other players often remarked, 'They’re playing tennis on a pickleball court, and this isn’t how the game should be played,'” Waters recalled. Despite facing criticism, she emphasized that their focus remained on winning rather than altering the game. “We weren’t trying to change the sport; we just wanted to succeed, and our strategy was effective.”
Over time, the once-criticized style of play has gained popularity in professional pickleball. “Now, nobody questions that approach. The game has evolved into a fast-paced and intense competition,” she added. At just 19, Waters feels she has already experienced a lifetime in the sport. “Sometimes I feel like I’ve lived a full life, and I’m only 19,” she expressed in a recent interview with a news channel. “Turning pro at such a young age has given me experiences that many don’t encounter until their 30s. I’ve essentially had nearly a decade-long career already, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
