Waters' Remarkable Achievement

On March 15, Anna Leigh Waters celebrated her 42nd title hat-trick at the Veolia Texas Open held in Texas. She triumphed in women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles events. Her partners, Ben Johns and Gabe Tardio, also showcased impressive performances. In the women's doubles final, Waters teamed up with Anna Bright to deliver a stellar performance, defeating the fourth-seeded duo of Parris Todd and Alix Truong with scores of 11-2, 11-6, and 11-4. This victory keeps Waters and Bright undefeated as a team in 2026, demonstrating their dominance throughout the match despite challenging weather conditions.

Todd and Truong entered the final with momentum from a thrilling semifinal victory over ninth-seeded Mari Humberg and Milan Rane. However, they struggled to find their rhythm against the top-seeded Waters and Bright, who controlled the match from the beginning. Waters noted that the windy conditions made it crucial to maintain discipline. She stated, “In the wind, it really came down to making the fewest unforced errors while still being aggressive.” Waters emphasized focusing on their own game rather than their opponents.

This strategic balance between patience and aggression was key. Despite the unpredictable weather, Waters and Bright remained focused, adhering to their game plan and avoiding mistakes that could be costly in windy conditions. Waters also secured the women's singles title by defeating Kate Fahey with scores of 11-1 and 11-6, completing her hat-trick by winning the mixed doubles alongside Ben Johns. However, they faced a tough challenge, needing three games to overcome Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin.

Johns and Tardio Shine in Men's Doubles

As the men's doubles final commenced, the wind intensified, but Johns and Tardio maintained their composure. They achieved a decisive victory over the fourth-seeded Andrei Daescu and Federico Staksrud with scores of 11-0, 12-10, and 11-7, continuing their flawless performance in the 2026 season. The first game was particularly dominant, with Johns and Tardio not allowing a single point. Although Daescu and Staksrud put up a stronger fight in the subsequent games, the winners remained resilient during critical moments to secure their victory.

On a day when the Texas wind tested their adaptability and resolve, both championship teams showcased not only their skills but also their ability to perform under pressure.
