Sri Lanka's Test Match Schedule Raises Concerns

During the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, Sri Lanka is set to compete in 12 Test matches, with only four scheduled for this year. Unlike other nations, Sri Lanka will primarily engage in six two-match Test series. This limited schedule has drawn criticism from former Test cricketer Angelo Mathews.

In a recent press interaction, Mathews expressed his disappointment over the lack of attention given to Test cricket, emphasizing that young fans in Sri Lanka are passionate about the format. He stated,

"It's quite unfortunate, to be honest. The younger generation is calling for more Test cricket. Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game, and we should advocate for an increase in matches. The enthusiasm for Test cricket among these youngsters is remarkable."

Mathews further insisted that Sri Lanka should aim to play a minimum of 10 Test matches annually.

"I believe we need at least 10 matches each year. Teams like England, India, and Australia are playing over 15 matches annually. Why can't we? We can do it. We must push for this, as we have a rich history in cricket and deserve to compete in Test matches like Australia, India, and England."

In contrast, countries such as Australia, England, and India are scheduled to play 22, 21, and 18 Test matches, respectively, during the same cycle. Currently, Sri Lanka, along with Bangladesh, has the fewest Test matches allocated.

This marks the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic that Sri Lanka has recorded its lowest annual Test match count.

Additionally, Mathews has announced that he will retire from Test cricket after the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, which begins today. He explained his decision, saying,

"I played my 100th Test in Galle, so I wanted to bid farewell there. The primary reason is that we currently have no immediate games scheduled. Our next Test assignment is not until a year from now, which is quite a long wait."
