Agassi's Vision for Pickleball in China

Renowned tennis player Andre Agassi has expressed his belief that China is set to become a significant center for the growth of pickleball. During his visit to the country on April 9, the eight-time Grand Slam winner emphasized that China has all the essential elements to propel the sport into its next phase of global popularity. He pointed out the country's large population, established culture of racquet sports, and developing infrastructure as crucial factors that could enhance the sport's appeal.

Since retiring from tennis, Agassi has taken on the role of a prominent advocate for pickleball, moving beyond just playing to actively promoting and investing in the sport. He has plans to establish a 'World Series of Pickleball' to create an international competition platform.

Agassi shared that his journey into pickleball began as a family pastime, enjoying the game with his wife, Steffi Graf. He noted, “What got us into it was us playing together as a family. Everybody was enjoying it. We loved that.” What started as a fun activity soon turned into a more serious engagement, where they found both familiar and challenging aspects of the game. “Some things translated very easily for us. And other things were very challenging. And we had to unlearn many things from tennis,” he remarked.

He highlighted the sport's unique combination of physical and mental challenges as a key factor in its growing popularity. “There was a physical outlet, there was a mental challenge, and there was a nuance to it that made us feel every day from the first day that we can get better,” Agassi explained.

Agassi also emphasized the social and inclusive nature of pickleball, which he believes is vital for its rapid global expansion. “I wanted to double down on the participation side of pickleball, because it's still in its infancy,” he stated, noting the health benefits and strong community ties the sport fosters.

He expressed optimism about China's potential for long-term pickleball development, stating, “All the ingredients are right for this part of the world. You got space, you got land, you got weather, you got facilities. You have a population where if you can get the paddle into young children's hands, you're going to start seeing a lot of them breakthrough on a world stage.”

His insights resonate with the growth of the domestic pickleball circuit in China. Sun Wenbing, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Tennis Association, reported that the China Pickleball Tour has seen rapid expansion, increasing from 80 stops in 2024 to over 600 this year.

Professional player Ben Johns also acknowledged China's potential, describing pickleball as a universally appealing sport. “It has something for everyone in every country and everyone seems to enjoy it,” he noted, adding that while many current players come from tennis or table tennis backgrounds, early exposure to pickleball could lead to even more skilled athletes in the future.

From its inception in the United States in 1965 to its current global expansion, pickleball is on the rise across various continents. With growing institutional support and participation in nations like China, the sport seems ready for its next international growth phase.
