Alexander Zverev Celebrates Historic Achievement as World Number One
Zverev's Journey to the Top
German tennis sensation Alexander Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam champion, recently shared his thoughts on achieving the world number one ranking in the ATP for the first time. He expressed that 'sometimes, one must wait for the best things in life,' and described the experience of being at the pinnacle of the sport as incredible. After years of challenges and near victories, Zverev, who has won 26 ATP titles, finally enjoys the glory he has long sought.
His ascent to the top spot followed a remarkable series of performances, including winning the French Open and the US Open, along with reaching the Wimbledon finals. In a heartfelt essay titled 'My Point' on the ATP's official site, Zverev reflected, 'No words can truly capture this year. Two Grand Slam titles, countless memories, and today, I woke up as the No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings. It is very special. Experiencing what it feels like to be on top of the world is amazing.' He added, 'Winning many significant tournaments is fulfilling, but having the No. 1 next to my name is a unique feeling that is hard to articulate.'
Family Support and Early Influences
Zverev acknowledged the crucial role of his family in his tennis career, particularly his father, Alexander Sr., who is also his coach, and his brother, Mischa, a former top 25 player. While their contributions are well-known due to their visibility during matches, Zverev emphasized that his mother, Irina, has been the most significant influence in his life and career.
'Many people discuss my father and brother, but the truth is that my mother has always been the most important figure in my tennis journey. She was my first coach and taught me how to play,' he stated. Zverev reminisced about how, during his formative years, while his father was busy with Mischa's junior tournaments, he and his mother spent a lot of time together, nurturing his passion for tennis.
Facing Health Challenges
Zverev shared how his mother's unwavering belief in him was pivotal, especially after he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of four. Despite the challenges, she remained confident that he would pursue his dreams in tennis. 'No matter what obstacles arose, she was determined not to let anything hinder my progress. Living with diabetes has made me mature faster than I might have otherwise,' he explained.
He recounted the responsibility he took on as a child, managing his diabetes while at school, and how his mother shielded him from negative conversations about his condition. 'I remember being six years old and having to manage my diabetes independently for hours each day. Those moments taught me to take charge of my health, which is something most kids don't have to think about,' he noted.
Personal Growth and Advocacy
Reflecting on his mother's influence, Zverev expressed gratitude for her support throughout his early years, coaching him until he was 16. He also discussed his insecurities regarding his diabetes, particularly during his early days on the tour. 'I tried to conceal my condition because I was embarrassed to inject myself in front of others,' he admitted.
Zverev also spoke about his ankle injury at the 2022 French Open, which led him to establish the Alexander Zverev Foundation. This initiative aims to support children with diabetes by providing essential medical resources. 'After my injury, I realized that many kids face similar challenges I did 20 years ago. This realization inspired me to create the foundation, and I am proud to help thousands of children each year,' he shared.
Looking Forward
As he looks ahead to 2026, Zverev reflected on a tough semifinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open, expressing satisfaction with his performance despite the defeat. 'I was focused on winning, and I knew that if I continued to work on my game, I would have opportunities in the future,' he stated.
He also recalled his first Grand Slam victory, which sparked his ambition to become world number one. 'Winning my first Grand Slam at Roland Garros was a significant milestone, and it made me think about reaching the top of the rankings,' he said. Zverev emphasized that his achievement is not just personal; it serves as inspiration for others with diabetes. 'I want to show that dreams can be achieved, even with this condition. I am proud to represent Type 1 diabetics and hope to inspire families facing similar challenges,' he concluded.
