Ajinkya Rahane Announces Retirement
Mumbai: Veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, renowned for his leadership during India's remarkable Test series victory against Australia in 2020-2021, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket. He expressed that the moment has come for him to transition to the next phase of his life.
At 38 years old, Rahane's career spanned from 2013, during which he participated in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is for India. Although he did not play for the national team after the 2023 Test series against the West Indies, he held onto hopes of a comeback until this year's IPL.
In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Rahane reflected on the inevitability of beginnings and endings in life. He stated, "I have always believed in timing, and today, I feel it is the right time for me to announce my retirement from all formats of international cricket."
He concluded the video with the message, 'Cap number 278, signing off.'
Throughout his Test career, Rahane accumulated 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties. In ODIs, he scored 2,962 runs at an average of 35.26, with three centuries and 24 fifties, while in T20Is, he made 375 runs.
Rahane's standout moment came in 2021 when he captained a depleted Indian side to a stunning 2-1 series win over Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, defying all expectations.
Following a heavy defeat in the first Test in Adelaide, where India was bowled out for just 36 runs, Rahane took over the captaincy. He led the team to victory in the second Test in Melbourne, scoring a crucial 112 runs against a formidable Australian bowling attack.
Reflecting on his journey, Rahane shared, "From my early days traveling from Dombivali to practice, I dedicated everything to this game. My dream was always to wear the India cap."
Despite stepping away from international cricket, Rahane plans to stay connected to the sport. He has expressed his desire to mentor the next generation and share the values he has learned throughout his career.
Having played for six franchises in the IPL, including Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, Rahane has made a significant impact in the league, amassing 5,367 runs in 212 matches with a strike rate of 125.60.
In an emotional farewell, he acknowledged the lessons cricket has taught him about resilience and humility, stating, "There have been many wins and losses, but the joy of playing and creating memories has been the greatest reward of my career."
Rahane's journey in cricket may be concluding, but he remains committed to contributing to the sport that has given him so much. He recently led Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title victory in the 2023-2024 season.
