Exciting Polo Action in Ahmedabad

The Gujarat Polo Club is gearing up to host the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament from January 2 to 4 at its Shela grounds, aiming to rejuvenate the sport of polo in the region and establish it as a prominent annual event in western India.

Mili Sheth, an Indian polo player, expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament, emphasizing its importance in promoting female participation in polo, a sport where women are currently underrepresented. With a decade of riding experience, Sheth shared her journey from falling in love with horses to competing in polo in cities like Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Sheth remarked, “I truly value the organization of a women’s polo competition, as there are very few female players in India. This initiative is a positive step, and I believe we will see more women in the sport in the future. I started riding ten years ago, fell in love with horses, and eventually transitioned into polo, playing in places like Jaipur and Jodhpur.”

Jayvirsinh Gohil, a founding member of the Gujarat Polo Club, announced that the tournament will feature eight teams—six men's and two women's—comprising top players from across the nation, with six female athletes participating in the women's teams and horses sourced from various parts of India.

“The Ahmedabad Polo Tournament will showcase eight teams, including six men's teams and two women's teams. All leading players from around the country will compete in Ahmedabad, with six players in the women's teams and horses arriving from all over India,” Gohil stated.

This three-day event will not only host competitive matches but also feature equine exhibitions, heritage-themed installations, and designated areas for spectators to engage families and younger audiences.

The tournament will kick off with a ceremonial parade, where all teams will enter the field on horseback, displaying team and sponsor flags. The opening ceremony will include cultural performances, culminating in the unveiling of the tournament trophy on the first day.

Throughout the three days, various cultural and entertainment activities are planned, including dance performances, acrobatics, and traditional demonstrations between matches, along with musical acts and fireworks.

Organizers aim to showcase the historical significance of polo in India and enhance its visibility in Gujarat. The closing ceremony will feature trophy presentations and awards for winning teams and standout performers.

Supported by corporate sponsors, the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament is anticipated to attract polo fans, sports enthusiasts, and families over the three-day event.
