Afghanistan Cricket Board Welcomes New Coaching Staff Ahead of T20I Series
New Appointments in Afghanistan Cricket
On Tuesday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) revealed the hiring of Toby Radford as the batting coach for the national team, alongside Robert Ahmun, who will take on the role of strength and conditioning trainer.
Both coaches are set to join the senior men's team in preparation for the upcoming three-match T20I series against the West Indies.
Toby Radford: The New Batting Coach
Toby Radford, a former First-Class cricketer with experience at Middlesex and Sussex, has previously coached Welsh Cricket. He is recognized as a Level 4-certified coach by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Currently, he is the head coach for Dhaka Capitals in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 season.
Radford has an impressive coaching background, having served as the Batting Coach at the Pakistan Cricket Board's High Performance Centre from 2022 to 2024 and as Head of High Performance for the Bangladesh Cricket Board from 2020 to 2022. He was also part of the West Indies coaching team during their victorious 2012 ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign and their historic Test series win against England in 2019.
In his playing career, the 54-year-old participated in 14 First-Class matches, accumulating 476 runs, including five half-centuries. In List A cricket, he scored 159 runs in six matches, averaging 31.80 with one fifty.
Robert Ahmun: The New Strength and Conditioning Trainer
Robert Ahmun, originally from Cardiff, Wales, recently held the position of Head of Performance Science and Medicine for the ECB, a role he took on in December 2022. He has been responsible for overseeing the physical preparation and medical services for England's national cricket teams.
With over 20 years of experience, Ahmun has previously served as the National Lead for Strength and Conditioning at the ECB from 2017 to 2022 and has been involved in coaching within the England Pathways program.
He holds a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Wales, Cardiff (2003) and a bachelor's degree from the University of Exeter (1998).
Upcoming T20I Series and World Cup
Afghanistan is set to face the West Indies in a T20I series, with matches scheduled for January 19, 21, and 22 in Dubai.
Following this series, both teams will compete in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka.
