Abhishek Sharma has expressed his admiration for Shubman Gill, who has recently been appointed as India's Test captain. The two cricketers share a long-standing friendship that dates back to their early days in Punjab cricket. At just 25 years old, Gill is set to take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma ahead of the upcoming series against England.


During a conversation with a sports channel, Abhishek conveyed his pride in Gill's accomplishment. He reminisced about their journey from playing U-14 and U-16 cricket for Punjab to Gill now assuming such a significant role. Abhishek remarked,


“Reflecting on his career, I remember our early days in the U-14 and U-16 Punjab teams. We all began our journey with the red ball. To see him become India’s Test captain is a remarkable achievement, and I am incredibly proud of him.”



Abhishek, who was part of the U-19 World Cup-winning team in 2018 alongside Gill, is confident that Gill will excel in his new role. He commended Gill's talent and determination, stating that he is among the finest players India has produced. He further added,


“We have played junior cricket together. He is one of the best players India has produced across all formats, and I believe he will fulfill his role exceptionally well. I am confident he will perform admirably for Team India and as a captain.”


Gill now holds the distinction of being India's fifth-youngest Test captain and the 37th overall. His composed demeanor and strong technique have garnered admiration from cricket analysts, and with the captaincy now in his hands, he faces a new challenge.
