Indian squash player Abhay Singh claimed the men's singles championship at the Tuanku Muhriz Trophy 2026 held in Seremban, Malaysia, on Sunday. He triumphed over third-seeded Henry Leung from Hong Kong with a score of 3-2 (11-7, 6-11, 3-11, 11-5, 12-10) in a thrilling final of the PSA Challenger Tour 15 event. This victory marks Abhay's 13th title on the PSA Tour and his second title this year, following his success at the India Open in Mumbai in March. Currently ranked 24th in the world, Abhay stands as India's top squash player. This win also signifies his third Tuanku Muhriz Trophy victory, having previously won in 2022 and 2024.

Path to the Championship

Abhay Singh began his tournament journey with a bye in the first round. He then faced Malaysia's Low Wa Sern in the second round, securing a 3-1 victory (8-11, 11-2, 11-6, 11-2). In the quarterfinals, he continued his winning streak against Mohammad Syafiq Kamal, winning 3-1 (11-4, 11-13, 11-5, 11-5). In the semifinals, he battled against another Malaysian player, Ameeshenraj Chandaran, and emerged victorious with a close 3-2 win (7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 11-3) after a 72-minute match.

Significance of the Victory

Abhay Singh was part of the Indian men's team that secured a gold medal and contributed to the mixed doubles team that won bronze at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. He is an essential member of India's squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2026, where he will compete in both men's singles and women's team events. The Asian Games are set to commence on September 19 in Japan. These recent victories are particularly significant as squash is set to debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
